Lack of Sleep and Weight Gain: a Killer Combination

Lack of sleep is all too common for individuals worldwide. The saying “there aren’t enough hours in the day” really hits home when you crawl into bed after midnight extremely exhausted and not even coming close to finishing everything you needed to do on your list. But can lack of sleep lead to weight gain?

The short answer- yes.

Individuals who receive less sleep than normal tend to overeat the following day. It’s quite possible that lack of sleep affects the hormone that controls appetite making hunger and being overtired a poor combination.

In analysis of 11 sleep studies with over 170 participants, researchers found that after a night of restricted sleep, around 4 hours in total, participants ate on average 385 more calories than they would after a full night’s rest. Not only were they consuming more, they were consuming more of the wrong things. Individuals who participated were also likely to eat more fat and less protein.

These studies were quite small in duration and participation, but we definitely think they’re onto something. Think back to a time where you didn’t get as much sleep as needed, were you at your best? Our team can reflect on a few times where lack of sleep hasn’t helped them to make the proper health and nutrition choices. Whether it was to get an extra large coffee in the morning, opt for a burger instead of the salad for lunch or skipping the gym to nap, we all run into different barriers when lack of sleep is involved.

With the possibility of sleep deprivation leading to obesity, we must take all precautions moving forward. So how do we combat this? We do our best day in and day out to stick to our routine and hit the hay on time, as often as possible. Sleep is just as important as getting in activity and fueling your body correctly, and we need to treat it like so!
