Journey Challenge Mode: Take Virtual Hikes Around The World

Test your fitness using one of Matchup’s Journey Challenges, a feature that allows anyone to trek along programmed trails with friends and family. The first one to the finish line wins! 

Once you’ve signed up or are logged in to Matchup, select “Create Challenge” from your drop down menu, and choose “Journey Challenge.” From there, you’ll be able to pick a real-life route to virtually step along with your friends and family in tow.

Throughout the challenge, you can track where you are along the trail and to see how your competition is faring. Just like you would on a hike in real-life, the longer your strides, the faster you’ll move along the trail, regardless of your total step count.

Join Any of These 5 Journey Challenge Trails

Pacific Crest Trail – 100.03 miles (about 200,000 steps). Get your “Wild” on, and hike a portion of this famous wilderness trek, which in total (in real life) spans 2,650 miles from Mexico and Canada. (Author Cheryl Strayed hiked 1,100 miles of it in her bestselling memoir.)

John Muir, whose writings on the Sierra Nevada mountains made portions of this trail internationally famous, once wrote: “Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you, as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.”

Colorado Trail – 200 miles (about 400,000 steps). The Colorado Trail runs 486 miles southwest of Denver through gorgeous forests and rolling mountains that provide plenty of breathtaking views (not to mention heart-pumping climbs). Walk this route, and you’ll also march along the Continental Divide.

Washington, D.C. – 20 miles (about 40,000 steps). Challenge your friends and family to stomp 20 miles around the nation’s capital. You can stroll down M street and through historic Georgetown, along the National Mall to the scenic Tidal Basin where you can view the Jefferson Memorial. Spring’s the perfect time of year for such a challenge — you can walk the District just in time to (pretend) view the city’s famous cherry blossoms. (Maybe the winner of your challenge should take home a Georgetown Cupcake?)

Mount Tipton Trail – 81.62 miles (about 162,000 steps). Take on the Arizona desert with a hike along a Mount Tipton trail. In total, the wilderness area covers 30,760 acres of the Mojave Desert. Take the extra mile with this challenge and encourage your fellow Journey Challengers to add some elevation into their steps — after all, Mount Tipton Peak, which stands 7,148 feet tall, is the centerpiece of this stunning park, which also holds herds of wild mustang horses and picturesque pinnacle rock formations.

New Zealand Trek – 92.72 miles (about 185,000 steps). Step your way to the fires of Mount Doom to destroy the ring — or just get in a good workout in one of the world’s most beautiful places, your choice. The countryside of New Zealand is not only known for its status as the filming location of The Lord of the Rings films, but also for its jaw-dropping and dramatic features, including active volcanoes, lakes and vast mountain ranges. Swoon.
