While we are busy with our work and personal lives, we tend to neglect our health. The idea gained popularity and people accepted the concept of 10,000 steps. But did they try to understand and reason with the suggested number?

Things to Consider While Choosing a Daily Step Goal

You need to consider a number of factors before you set your number. Depending on your activity level, lifestyle and abilities consider these points.

Your Daily Routine

An average person has a stride length of about 2.1 to 2.5 feet which means that approximately 2,000 steps equals to a mile. If you have a desk job, the number of steps that you take in a day would be less compared to someone who has more field work. In such scenarios, you can try to walk to and fro from work as you find feasible. Studies have shown that the most sedentary older adults and individuals living with disability and chronic illness who are limited in their everyday activities could also benefit by taking 5,500 steps daily or 4,600 steps per day if averaged over a week.

Your Diet

Put a check on what you eat. You cannot surrender your health to one single factor; be it counting the steps you take, exercising or eating healthy. All these factors together would result in a healthy lifestyle while individually it would not be of much help. So the key is to eat healthy and exercise regularly.

Get a Better Understanding of Your Current Activity

Once you have chosen a tracker or other measurement tool you’ll need to get a better understanding of your baseline activity. Wear it for a weak or so and monitor your progress everyday. You may not be hitting 10,000 steps and that’s no problem. Understanding where you’re at first will help to set the right goals.

Start Small

If you’re baseline is 5,000 steps don’t jump to 10,000 steps. It’s the gradual change that works best! Start with increasing your step goal by a smaller number, say 2,000 steps. Once you’re reaching this goal with ease it’ll be time to increase again. Keep repeating this until you’re at the step goal you feel happy and comfortable with.
