How to Avoid End-of-Year Stress

The holidays are over and more likely than not, you’re evaluating the current year and focusing on resolutions to improve upon things for the next. There is a lot of overall stress that comes with the end of the year, as people become more irritable, overwhelmed, the days seem shorter – meaning you’ve probably felt like you’re accomplishing less throughout the day.

Some of the signs of end-of-year stress can be anxiety, feeling lethargic, more irritability and a hard time focusing. If these are out of the ordinary for you, it’s important that you realize these symptoms and act to help resolve them. You don’t want any carryover of that energy going into the New Year.

Some of the ways to help combat end-of-year stress:

  • List your positives: It’s easy to forget how much you actually accomplish in a year because many are always looking at what’s next. Reminding yourself of progress made and goals accomplished is a great way to help manage stress and avoid feeling like you wasted an entire year.
  • Find ways to relax: With the days seeming shorter, there can be a tendency to feel like you have to cram more work into your schedule to feel like you’re staying on top of things. Instead of piling on more responsibilities, focus on things to relax your body and mind. Spend time with those that put you in a positive state of mind, do yoga, play board games – participate in activities that relax your mind and put you in a good mood.
  • Don’t be too prideful to ask for support: Dealing with stress is no easy matter and you shouldn’t feel above seeking help if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Take a moment and breathe when you begin to feel close to a breaking point. Focus on the moment you’re in, what makes you happy, rather than making yourself unnecessarily anxious by concentrating on things that have yet to happen.
  • Limit alcohol consumption: It’s the end of the year, so toasting to a productive beginning is cool. What you don’t want to do is find yourself depending on spirits to help sleep or drink away the stress of the day. Remember, moderation.
